American Dream : drawings from a rough childhood by Chuck Bowdish
SHFAP announces it's first artist book (shfap 4), American Dream : drawings from a rough childhood by Chuck Bowdish. The book is made up of wildly imaginative yet classical pen and ink drawings juxtaposed with the artist's handwritten text. The text contains both quotational and original passages. Images and text refer to dark sides of both the artist's childhood and the Eisenhower/Kennedy era of the American dream in relation to the Vietnam war, the Mafia, Castro and a kind of battle between innocence and the dark forces of the world. Bowdish's drawings refer at once both to neo-classical period Picasso and the vocabulary of underground comics. The book is a hand-numbered limited edition of 500 of which 26 copies (roman numeral I-XXVI) include an original drawing and collaged elements. Additionally these twenty-six are signed by the artist. No two are alike. The drawings are all different as are the collage elements. The book is available for $25 postpaid for the numbered edition and $100 for the special roman numbered. copies. Payment via Paypal.
BRICK WALK & HARVEY
Catalog of Works for Sale
summer 2009
Welcome to the second Brick Walk & Harvey catalog of works for sale. Brick Walk & Harvey
is a collaboration between Steven Harvey of steven harvey fine art projects in New York and
Kevin Rita of Brick Walk Fine Art in West Hartford, Connecticut. Our mission is to bring works
of interest to your attention. Our first catalog focused on the generation of artists who came
of age after World War II, many of whom studied with Hans Hofmann, along with the generation
of painters who followed them. This time we include subsequent generations of painters in
their twenties, thirties and forties. We are particularly happy to present works from the estates
of Gandy Brodie, John Heliker, Earl Kerkam and Seymour Remenick, post war New York painters
much acknowledged by their peers and perceptive critics of the period. Thomas Hess wrote
about Earl Kerkam that he ”walked around like a ghost from a Kenneth Fearing socialist-realist
poem of the 1930’s. And the fantastic thing about that ghost, color of tobacco juice and cherryphosphate,
was that it sheltered a pure dream of delectable painting.” This catalog is dedicated
to the spirit of Earl Kerkam (1891-1965). For purposes of clarity there is a code at the bottom
of each page indicating which dealer to contact for a specific work. We hope you enjoy looking
through this as much as we enjoy working with the material. We look forward to being in touch
with you.
